Luck of the draw

Social responsibility comes with being a designer. It’s part or our job to help raise awareness of things that we believe matter.

You probably don’t know Kim Franks, but you should. Kim was diagnosed with breast cancer several years ago. She underwent a double mastectomy followed by reconstructive surgery. Since that time she has dedicated much of her time and energy to raise money to fund local grants, treatment, education, and research for breast cancer with her annual event: Ride for the Cure.

Kim combined two of her passions, motorcycle riding and fighting breast cancer, to create a day where people join in an all day ride through West Michigan’s terrain in support of a cause that has touched many lives.

This year’s ride is a Poker Run. At each stop participants get a playing card to see who has the winning hand at the end of the route festivities.

We’ve all heard the term “luck of the draw.” Well, Kim has taken the hand she was dealt and made a real impact. Rider for the Cure proves how steady effort and commitment can make a difference. Over the years, Kim has brought community together to raise thousands of dollars to battle breast cancer through this event. If I play my cards right, she’ll ask me to help next year, too.

Proceeds from the 2011 Ride for the Cure benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure West Michigan.
